AFTRA Sets Convention Theme

AFTRA’s convention is set to begin in Chicago in three weeks, with the upbeat theme “From Broadcast to Broadband and Beyond.”

The bi-annual session is uniquely AFTRA. It’s the highest governing body of the union (higher even than the National Board). Delegates are elected from all the locals in proportion to the membership in those locals, and in the three day meeting the delegates elect national officers and set policy under which the union operates.

In an e-mailed message to members, AFTRA President Roberta Reardon described the convention as a time where AFTRA will be “examining all of the ways that AFTRA members can work together to secure good jobs across the spectrum of the entertainment and news media.” Reardon is running for re-election to what would be a third two year term, and as of the moment faces no opposition.

The convention has its own website.

One side note: we found this bit in the New York Times from last week, coming out of the news conference we told you about – but the New York view of the session was apparently a lot different than the trades. It quotes Reardon as saying she does not see a SAG-AFTRA merger attempt as likely before the 2011 negotiation cycle. It’s worth a click.
