Campaign Watch: MF/SAGNOW/AMJ Supporters Set Teleconference, Reject Live Questions
After insisting they want a live debate, Anne Marie Johnson’s New York supporters say they’ll hold a one hour teleconference in which she’ll respond to member questions, but only if those questions are submitted at least a day in advance.

So then it;s really not a teleconference … it’s a tele-speech. And only questions selected will be the ones AMJ wants to answer….not the ones we want to ask.
Another case of M1st Spint….
AMJ offered a live SAG Presidential debate last week in Burbank for ANYONE to attend and ask questions. No questions were off limits yes, I was there. Questions were written on index cards and read by a moderator. The event has been on there website for two weeks. Take a look. Why didn’t you attend?

Admin. Comment – Not a debate. A meet and greet. No other candidates were present. Funny that she won’t answer questions from New York members without pre-screening.
If in fact the questions are pre-screened and the tough questions selectively ommitted it will backfire. If the voters tune in to hear her answer their questions and realize she ignored them altogether it will have a negative impact on the NY voters (especially anyone who took the team to dial in and listen, and don’t mean her diehard supporters who will be voting for her regardless-the call wont be swaying their vote anyway).
Although I disagree with just about everything AMJ does, she does not strike me as stupid. I assume the questions must be in a day in advance to allow her an opportunity to have scripted answers for those tough questions. It is easier to prepare a lie in advance than on the spot. So, I would assume very few if any questions will be tossed entirely (unless duplicates), but some of those answers she will be reading would have been scripted (by the PR firm?).
I also find it amusing that all but 1 of the S&GNow!/M1st East web site are all Hollywood based MF members and candidates.
C’mon Erik – SAGNOW! is really really MF east…admit it
And by the way the upcoming teleconference is not totally free = cell pohone users will have their minutes used as with any call.
For all we know – the conference could be pre-recorded….
What I don’t understand is that AMJ had an opportunity while in NY last week to actually TALK TO NEW YORKERS but instead held an “invitation only” fund raiser for MembershipFirst/East.
At the same time, Ken Howard and Amy Aquino flew to New York, took questions from a live audience, on the spot, which was an event OPEN TO ALL MEMBERS. No submitting questions in advance, no working on answers.
Wonder what they’re afraid of?

Run and funded by us, not Anne-Marie or MF.
But you all seem to want to continue your fantasy.
Secondly, what part of ‘private’ press event and fundraiser don’t you and others understand? Why would you invite opposition (such as candiates running against you) to a PRIVATE press event?
Has USAN never had a PRIVATE fundraiser? You know–just for Candidates, their family, friends, and supporters? OF COURSE you all have!
Should we be upset that Joyce Gordon’s home was NOT open to ALL SAG members at HER private fundraiser for USAN / UFS?

She has had open ‘meet and greets’ also.
She repeatedly invited UFS candidate Ken Howard to a LIVE in person DEBATE. All attempts so far were declined. Why?

Remember when I asked you years ago to attend a debate re: then merger?
YOU declined. So did ALL the USAN Board members and supporters, yet 5 USAN Board members came to the debate and sat in the audience.

But I digress….The teleconference is being set up in such a way that it is the MOST economic, fair and participant friendly communication from a candidate to NY constituents.

This is on the Membership First website, complaining about no one wanting to debate Johnson:
“Since the role of the Screen Actors Guild President is 90% extemporaneous when chairing meetings and/or speaking from the dais a written exchange would be useless in showing the SAG Membership anything but the ability to use Wikipedia between emails.”
What’s the difference between studying for a day before giving spoken answers and studying for a day before giving written answers?
If the SAG candidate you endorse says the job is 90% extemporaneous, don’t you think she should take the opportunity to show everyone in NY how good she is?

And Erikkkk, MEMBERSHIP FIRST/SAGNow has NEVER had any open forum in New York. Why is that?
I’ve said this before about “debate” it is not done in union politics and I hope it never is done. Live debate is just another word for a rowdy, shout down for which ever side hosts the debate.
Live interviews or interviews in print with moderator questions are much better and beneficial to the members who listen/watch.
If you had read the invitation completely you’d have seen that it was BOTH a PRIVATE press event AND a FUNDRAISER.
And it was NOT ‘hidden’ from SAG members. A good majority of the attendees WERE SAG memebers.
Were Joyce Gordon’s or Tony Shaloub’s fundraisers OPEN to ALL of SAG?

If people here submit questions to you in advance of the deadline, will you make sure they get asked?
After all, you’re a candidate who has endorsed Johnson for President. If you can’t get her to listen to you during a campaign, how can anyone believe she’s going to listen to you in the happenstance you both get elected?
In anticipation of Erik’s acceptance of this challenge to prove that he would be a worthy representative of all NY SAG members, I strongly suggest that any NY members among us send questions in and also give them to Erik before the deadline so he can insure they get asked and answered.
After all, he did say “Anne-Marie Johnson will talk LIVE and answer ALL questions submitted.” The Ponies and Ice Cream NOW website also says “Anne-Marie Johnson will be online live to answer all your questions and concerns.”

and copy Erik on them so he can make sure your “questions and concerns” are addressed.
And if you are wary of using your real name on the questions, try “Phil.” That one seems to be very popular with the party hosts.

If questions are being vetted in advance, and no one is to ask question during the actual “teleconference”…what you’re really giving is a “tele-cast”…and it could have been previously recorded…
Ken Howard and Amy Aquino flew into NY on their own dime last week specifically to meet NY SAG members. They attended an event that was open to ALL SAG members where they fielded questions on the spot from these members. I have heard that some SAG members tried to attend the MF/East event, but were turned away at the door.
Too bad Ann Marie couldn’t do the same when she was in town for the MF/East fundraiser. I still don’t understand why she needs a heads-up on questions from the members. Unless it is to prepare her answers.
The event the following evening at Joyce Gordon’s house wasn’t a fundraiser.

No one ever explained to him that at a live POLITICAL event, “live Q&A” means “live members of the audience ask non-scripted questions, and the politicians give answers to those questions either from memory (if they’ve been coached in advance what questions are likely to come up) or ad lib.”
Of course, Erik-Anders’s ignorance of the political meaning of the term reflects his complete unsuitability for elective office in the Guild. It’s just one more straw piled on the camel’s back.
