60 Protest MPTF Closing Far Outside Pre-Emmy Bash

Oddly, the small protest was staged outside CAA, two blocks from the event.

I wouldn’t say “staged outside CAA,” I’d say forcibly moved there by the police at the request of the MPTF. I’d hoped the “Free Speech Zones” were unique to our last President, but I now see they are not.

I think this whole thing is extremely disgusting, particularly because I do not believe the MPTF is anywhere near broke. Sweeping those protesting their actions out of the way is very telling.

I say this as one who will not need their help, and who used to donate to them, before they began tossing out the old folks earlier this year.

I will simply say that when those members of Membership First who are in the Board Room had the opportunity to help the Home by allowing the modest residuals of a board game go to the Home, they were the people who voted against the proposal. And the Board heard at the last meeting that the game in question had earned nearly a million dollars for members. That could have given the long term care facility another month.

You are not very specific but don’t think I would want Membership First or any other group to give away my residuals, to any charity, without my consent.

Now if you are trying to put the blame on the MPTF being underfunded, on MF because of this, that is a real stretch. It is not SAG’s (or aftra’s) responsibility.

I agree, Mike….while we all certianly sympathize, SAG is not in any financial position significantly help. It was an MF motion in the Board room to “Support” the MPTF…and it became a political football. The only reason the motion was brought up by MF is so they could campaign that they supported the motion, to make the rest who didn’t look bad. I understand it took several hours of Board time which should have been spent on SAG business, so other agenda items had to be postponed until the next meeting.

  5. Greg says:

And that’s my point as well. They were not concerned enough to help when they could have been effective. And, no, it wouldn’t have been giving your residuals away without your permission. As I understand it, it was a motion to get permission from the members to make a donation. After all, there are tax considerations.

Ah, but it certainly is a reflection on the attitude of our society toward those less fortunate that in a town dominated by the entertainment industry, no one could save the MPTF.

    Quite sad really.

Actually, only the long term care facility was closed. And that was done to save the MPTF. If they hadn’t closed it, the entire home was at risk. Al because health care costs are through the roof and climbing. We’re paying higher premiums ourselves come next year.

  8. David says:

Long term care and the hospital are not closed. MPTF wants to close the services but has not done so. Keeping long term care open may save MPTF.
