Comcast’s NBC Takeover – What does it mean?

On the face of it, nothing good, at least for union members. GE is expected to announce the sale of NBC to Comcast some time this coming week.

“If NBC’s parent, GE, is virulently anti-union, Comcast makes GE look like the Wobblies.” That’s how one staff negotiator who has dealt with both put it.

One sub-unit at NBC that’s probably really worried is the NBC News group that decertified its union a few years back. They gave up severance benefits in the deal that in some cases more than $250,000, saying they were happy with their management, and they didn’t want to pay inion dues or AFTRA health insurance premiums when they could get GE benefits.

Ooops.
